A celebration of Long Island's Surf Community

The Blue Water Vagabond Surf Festival started in 2019 as a way to gather together the local surf community and celebrate their contributions to local culture, recreation, and environmental causes on the south shore of Long Island, NY.

This event has grown to include an Opening Party before the surf festival begins and our organization has grown also with the establishment of our own non-profit. The Opening Party is a fun gathering of surfers and community members, with a focus on giving back and supporting causes that directly impact our surrounding area.

In the past several years, we have raised money for The Post Morrow Foundation, CEED, Boys and Girls Club of Bellport, and Brookhaven Landfill Action and Remediation Group. We have supported the HOG Farm in establishing a community compost dropoff program for farm members.

The Surf Festival is held at Ho Hum Beach, on Fire Island. This event is a friendly competition, focusing on the spirit and creativity at the heart of surfing. All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate. Other activities, such as beach clean ups and community art projects provide additional activities on the beach.

Our Sponsors

Huge thanks to our sponsors for donating items for raffle prizes at our Opening Party. Tickets will be for sale at the party. You won't want to miss a chance at these prizes!

Blue Water Vagabond Surf Festival Origins

The festival is organized by the Fire Place Initiative, a non-profit 501c3. We are a team of passionate volunteers who are committed to making a positive impact in our community. The festival name is taken from a book by local Brookhaven, NY environmentalist and author, Dennis Puleston.

We also host the Osprey Open, a fun tennis competition that brings people of all ages and skill levels together. Both events are designed to highlight the strong community spirit and raise money to support community engagement activities. These activities and events are focused on connecting under-resourced areas of our community with nature.
